How to Cook the Perfect Steak Every Time

Cooking steak at home can be intimidating, but with the right techniques, you can achieve restaurant-quality results. Follow these expert tips to make the perfect steak every time!

1. Choose the Right Cut

Different cuts have different textures and flavors. Some of the best options include:

  • Ribeye – Rich, marbled, and full of flavor.
  • Filet Mignon – Tender and lean.
  • New York Strip – Well-balanced with a good amount of marbling.

2. Let It Come to Room Temperature

Before cooking, let your steak sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes. This ensures even cooking and prevents the steak from seizing up when it hits the hot pan.

3. Season Simply but Generously

Salt and pepper are all you need for a great steak. Season it generously just before cooking to create a flavorful crust.

4. Use High Heat and a Heavy Pan

A cast-iron skillet or a grill is perfect for searing. Heat it until it’s smoking hot before adding the steak. This high heat creates a delicious crust on the outside while keeping the inside juicy.

5. The Perfect Sear: Don’t Move It Too Soon

Place your steak in the pan and don’t touch it for at least 3-4 minutes. Flipping too early prevents a proper crust from forming. Once the first side is golden brown, flip it and cook for another 2-4 minutes (depending on desired doneness).

6. Use the Touch Test for Doneness

  • Rare: Soft with a slight bounce
  • Medium-Rare: Firm but still slightly springy
  • Medium: Firmer with some give
  • Well-Done: Very firm with little bounce

You can also use a meat thermometer:

  • Rare: 120-130°F
  • Medium-Rare: 130-135°F
  • Medium: 135-145°F
  • Well-Done: 150°F+

7. Let It Rest Before Slicing

After cooking, let your steak rest for at least 5-10 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute, making the steak more tender and flavorful.

Follow these steps, and you’ll have a perfectly cooked, juicy steak every time!
